On Sunday, June 3 we will walk to benefit this great organization. It is the very first walk for the Friendship Circle and we hope that it will not be the last. The walk will begin at Candlewood Middle School in Dix Hills at 9:30 am. By visiting our website you can become a donor and sponsor those on the walk, and of course we welcome everyone to walk with us too. You can register right on the website too.

We encourage you to spread the word to family and friends as well. We’ve even made it simple by providing Facebook and Twitter share buttons to let everyone know. Ariella’s Frienship Circle is a non-profit organization providing help to families with special needs children in the Western Suffolk area. Currently there are more than 75 Jewish teenagers who give their time each week. The program includes home visits, sports sessions, holiday programs, and much more.

All registered walkers will receive a free t-shirt and water will be provided, too. The actual walk begins at 10 am and ends around 11-11:30 am. Donate to this great cause so that we can continue to help those in need here at the Long Island Jewish Center.

Not much of one if you ask me. But at the Chai Center there is more cause for celebration. It’s not just about embracing American culture with some tasty hamburgers and hotdogs, although who could resist that allure? It is also that time of year to celebrate Lag B’Omer. It is a time for joy during an otherwise mournful period.

The Jewish community must count the days between Passover, which commemorates the Exodus, and Shavu’ot, the commemoration of the giving of the Torah. Redemption was not complete until then. During this in between time, no weddings, parties, or dinners with dancing are allowed. Until of course we reach Lag B’Omer. So on this day, we will celebrate at the Long Island Jewish Center. The barbecue is on Thursday, May 10th at 5:00pm. Admission is $12 for non-members and $10 for members. Those bringing the entire family pay $54 for non-members and $48 for members. There will also be a fire and ice show as well. It will most certainly be a wonderful celebration with friends and family.

Find out more info at TheChaiCenter.com and learn about Kabbalah classes, events, and more.

The feeling of belonging to a community is very important, and sometimes we think that just means the adults. But kids need to be involved too. It is a good feeling to spend time with others in your area and not just spend time with classmates in school. It’s important for children to have a diverse group of friends but they should also enjoy spending time with those who share the same beliefs and ideals.

Besides the typical Shabbat services offered on Friday Friday evening and Saturday mornings, the Chai Center offers a Junior Congregation for weekly Shabbat. The services for the Jewish youth occur every week between 11:00am-12:00pm. The youth leaders pack a lot into that hour with games, snacks, raffles, prizes, and more. The Chai Center welcomes all children and it’s the perfect opportunity to make new friends and keep in touch with old ones.

Besides weekly services, kids and teens should be on the lookout for more great activities and programs to become involved in. There is literally something for everyone, young and old alike. Visit TheChaiCenter.com to learn more and join other programs.

It starts with Jewish baby naming and moves onto bar mitzvah training, Hebrew school, marriage, etc. One stage of our lives that no one really wants to think about is death. It’s an inevitable path for us all, but while we’re still here on earth we can honor our loved ones who have taken this final step.

The Kaddish program is a way to remember both the living and dead. It is a deeply meaningful prayer for those of Jewish faith. It is supposed to be said during the three daily prayer services and for the first eleven months for parents, or thirty days for other relatives. The Kaddish is also said on each Yahrtzeit, the anniversary of the passing. The Chai Center can take care of saying these prayers for you by offering two different Kaddish and Yahrtzeit plans. The first, for $250, will be the Kaddish and Mishnayot recited on the Yahrtzeit perpetually. For $360, the Kaddish and Mishnayot will be recited for eleven months and on the day of the Yahrtzeit perpetually.

The Chai Center will even notify the family of the upcoming anniversary. Speak with a representative from the Chai Center today to learn more.

If you’re looking for a way to bring more spirituality and happiness into your marriage, couples should sign up for the new Art of Marriage course at the Long Island Jewish Center. The course will be give over a six week period, beginning on May 1 and reoccurring every subsequent Tuesday. The classes start at 7:30 pm and last until 9 pm. The fee is $80 per class, which includes a student textbook and refreshments.

Marriage is not just a human ideal. It is also a spiritual journey with your partner. The classes will teach couples how to attain this spiritual aspect in their marriage and strengthen it with lessons from both modern and ancient Jewish texts. Newlyweds to couples who have been together for decades can all gain helpful insight. The classes that will be covered include “the case for marriage,” “Jewish bedroom secrets,” “will my spouse ever change,” “becoming a better half,” “danger ahead,” and “make up or break up.”

Go to one or all of the classes, but going to all of them is highly recommended. Check back for more adult education classes, as well as courses for the Jewish youth.

One town that is particularly picturesque is Glen Cove. If you don’t know about Glen Cove, you should. It’s a beautiful city built on the hills and right by the Long Island Sound. It is also home to the famous Glen Cove Mansion –quite a site! This is the setting for a wonderful Shabbos in late April –the perfect time of year to witness budding flowers and warm weather.

On April 27-28, you and your family can spend Shabbos here instead of at the Long Island Jewish Center. The “retreat,” dubbed Shabbaton, is open to couples, singles, and families. It’s the perfect opportunity to become a more insightful and spiritual person or to further enrich yourself in Judaism. There will be plenty of programs and activities to keep the kids busy, as well as lectures for the adults. Not to mention we’ll be dining on delicious food.

The cost is $200 per adult for double occupancy or $300 per adult for single occupancy. Children are only $50, unless under the age of 2 in which case they are free. The cost covers 5 gourmet meals, the room, speakers, and entertainment. Space is limited so please don’t pass up this chance!

One crucial preparation is to rid the home of chametz. Chametz is any leaven food, meaning foods that contain grain and water and have been allowed to ferment and rise. This doesn’t just include bread, it also includes cereal, cake, cookies, pasta, pizza, and even beer. Actually, any food that contains grains is considered chametz. Processed food not certified kosher may be included.

No chametz may be eaten or in the home for the eight days of Passover. Getting rid of all the chametz completely in the home can be a daunting task. Which is why you need to start early. But for some, it’s impossible to do this. So what can you do? You can actually sell your chametz to a non-Jew and then buy it back from him after Passover. It’s important to know that the sale of it is not symbolic. It is a legally binding transaction.

Make sure you pick one spot to store the chametz because you cannot use or enter the area for the duration of Passover. The Chai Center allows you to sell it directly online to make it easier for you. To learn more, visit the Long Island Jewish Center.

In just a few weeks it’ll be time to celebrate Passover, the celebration of when the Israelites were freed from slavery in Egypt. Passover begins on the 15th day of the month of Nisan in the Jewish calendar. This year it falls on Friday, April 6 at sundown and ends on the evening of Saturday, April 14. Of course the Chai Center will be holding services –a chance to celebrate the Pesach in a traditional setting with family, friends, and the rest of the community.

The first Seder will be held that Friday, April 6th with Rabbi and Mrs. Saacks. The second Seder is the following day, April 7th, with Rabbi and Mrs. Lehr. Seats are limited so you will definitely want to reserve a spot for either or both days as soon as possible. The fee is $50 for adult members and $55 for non-members. Children are $25 or $30 for members and non-members respectively.

The holidays are always an important time of year to gather with loved ones. But at least you know you can always enjoy the company and community at the Chai Center. Sign your children up for Hebrew school or take part in the Jewish baby naming.

How can one explain that? I hate to say it, but dating and relationships don’t really get that much easier the older you get. Sure you have more knowledge and experience, but that doesn’t mean you have a full grasp of it. But I can say that it’s even more confusing for Jewish teenagers. That is why the Chai Center is offering a new course for teens all about the complications that can arise on the dating scene.

The course lasts a few weeks, beginning on March 15 and ending on May 3. It will be held every Thursday from 7-8:30pm. The course is only $60, but you can bring a friend for only $36. A lot will be covered over those few weeks. Some topics include why do we desire to be in romantic relationships, how can you determine if a relationship is beneficial or damaging, what is the purpose of physical relations, and what can you do to keep a marriage healthy after several years. These are some big questions with some complicated answers.

We can’t promise you all the answers; you’ll have to learn through experience for some. But the Long Island Jewish Center can help guide you in the right direction. Love and marriage aren’t easy, but we’re here to help.

You’re in for a treat if you’re free March 17th. David Lawrence is an incredible mind reader who will delve into the deepest parts of your mind. Okay, maybe he won’t know all your secrets, but start spouting off the names of relatives, friends, and even pets that you have not thought about in years.

I’m not sure how he, or others like him, do it, but it’s pretty incredible to say the least. Not impressed that easily? Maybe you’ll enjoy watching him solve complex mathematical problems in under 25 seconds. If all else fails to blow your mind, you can at least enjoy some delicious dinner which includes a selection of soups, salads, and wraps. But I’m fairly certain you’ll walk away with a changed opinion of Mr. Lawrence. If anything, he’ll provide you with a few laughs throughout the evening too.

Join the Long Island Jewish Center on March 17 at 8:30pm. If you RSVP before March 10, admission is $20. After, it is $25 per person. Members will receive 10% off the price. As always, look for upcoming events for the whole family, as well as Hebrew school and other classes.
